Skilled Migration Points Test

Part 1 - Skill qualifications

The occupation nominated must be on the Skilled Occupations List current at the time of application, and must be one which fits your skills and qualifications. The following points are available:

 

Your score is

For most occupations where training is specific to the occupation: You must normally have a qualification, such as a degree or trade certificate, and experience which meets the relevant Australian standards and which is specifically related to your nominated occupation.

For more general professional occupations: You would generally hold a qualification equivalent to an Australian degree (but it need not be specifically related to your nominated occupation).

For other general skilled occupations: You would generally have a qualification equivalent to an Australian diploma or advanced diploma, but it need not be specifically related to your nominated occupation.

Part 2 - Age

You must be aged between 18 and 44. If your age at time of application is:

Part 3 - Language Ability

You may be required to sit an English language test (for more details, see our page on English language skills). If your English language ability is found to be:

4 - Employment Experience (Specific Work Experience)

This is not to be confused with the concept of recent work experience, which is discussed above and is a mandatory requirement without which you cannot make an application under this visa category. Under this part, you receive the following points:

Work Experience in 60 point occupations (only): if for at least 36 months during the 48 months immediately before the date of application you have worked in a nominated skilled occupation, or a closely related skilled occupation, for which 60 points are available.

Other Work Experience (applicable for 40 and 50 point occupations) if for at least 36 months during the 48 months immediately before the date of application you have worked in some other skilled occupation.

Part 5 - Spouse Skill Qualifications

Spouse Skill Qualifications: If your spouse:

Your score is

  1. is under 45 years of age at time of application; and

  2. has vocational English; and

  3. has nominated a skilled occupation in the visa application; and

  4. has been assessed by the relevant assessing authority as having suitable skills for that occupation; and

Either:

    1. has completed a degree, diploma or trade qualification which has taken at least 2 year's full-time study in the 6 months immediately before the date of application in Australia; or

    2. has been employed in a skilled occupation for at least:

      • 12 months in the 18 months immediately before the application date (if 60 points are specified for that occupation); or

      • 24 months in the 36 months immediately before the application date (if 40 or 50 points are specified for that occupation)

Part 6 - Australian Education

 

Your score is

You have completed an Australian doctorate at an Australian educational institution after a period of at least 2 years full time (2 academic years) while in Australia

You have completed an Australian Masters or Honours degree (at least upper second class level) at an Australian educational institution while in Australia, and prior to completing the Masters or Honours degree, you were awarded an Australian bachelor degree as a result of at least 1 year full time study while in Australia.

The total period of full time study in Australia was at least 2 years (2 academic years)

You have completed full time study in Australia for a total of at least 2 years (2 academic years) towards the award of a degree, diploma or trade qualification

Part 7 - Skills Targeting

 

Your score is

Occupation in Demand with Job Offer: If you have nominated an occupation in demand in your application and have an offer of full-time employment in that occupation or a closely related occupation in an organisation that had at least 10 full-time employees at all times in the 24 months immediately before the date at which the application was made

Occupation in Demand, no Job Offer: if you have nominated an occupation in demand in your application, but as yet have no job offer in this occupation

Part 8 - Bonus Points

You may be awarded 5 bonus points if you meet one of the following conditions (you can ONLY claim bonus points for ONE item):

 

Your score is

Investment in Designated Security: If you have deposited at least $100,000 in a designated security for at least 12 months

Employed in Skilled Occupation: If you have been employed in Australia in a skilled occupation for at least 6 months in the 48 months immediately before the date of the application, while holding a substantive visa authorising you to work

Non-English Qualification: If you are the holder of a qualification (that is of an equivalent standard to a degree awarded by an Australian tertiary educational institution) the tuition of which was conducted in a designated language

Professional Interpreter or Translator: If you are accredited as a professional interpreter or translator (level 3) in a designated language by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters

Part 9 - Points for Relationship - please see the section on sponsorship & AoS

You may receive points if you or your spouse has a relative who:

  • Is an Australian citizen or permanent resident; and

  • Is willing to sponsor you

You or your spouse must be related to the sponsor as either:

  • A non-dependent child

  • A parent

  • A brother or sister

  • A niece or nephew

 

Your score is

If you have a relative who is an Australian citizen or eligible permanent resident and who is willing (and eligible) to sponsor you:

Part 10 - Points for regional Australia/low population growth metropolitan areas

  • Applicants who can claim points for Australian qualifications may also be eligible to claim points for having lived and studied for at least 2 years in regional Australia or low population growth metropolitan areas.

  • Having lived and studied for at least 2 years in one or more areas in regional Australia or low population growth metropolitan areas

·         5 points

The following areas meet one or other of the definitions:

  • all of NSW is included except for Sydney, Newcastle, the Central Coast and Wollongong;

  • all of Victoria is included, except for Melbourne;

  • all of Queensland is included, except for Brisbane and the Gold Coast;

  • all of Western Australia, except for Perth;

  • in South Australia, Adelaide is included due to its low population growth rate being less than 50 per cent of the national average. The rest of South Australia is also included;

  • all of Tasmania is included;

  • all of the Northern Territory is included, and

  • no area in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is included
